Summit Fire & EMS firefighter dies at scene of fire

A Summit Fire & EMS firefighter fell to his death early this morning from the rooftop of a five-story condominium in Copper Mountain where he was battling a fire.

Ken Jones, 46, a beloved 20-year veteran of the fire department, had climbed to the roof in search for access to the fire reported just before 2 a.m. at the Bridge End condominium building at 860 Copper Road.

“He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. He was a firefighter’s firefighter,” said Summit Fire & EMS Chief Jeff Berino. “He’s been a valued member of our family for many years.”

Jones, renowned for his quiet demeanor and can-do attitude, leaves behind a wife and two children – as well as the entire Summit Fire & EMS “family,” which is devastated by his death, the first in department history.

The cause of the fall as well as the fire will be under investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, as is typical procedure involving a firefighter line-of-duty death. No foul play is suspected.

Additional information will be released as it is made available. A short press briefing will be conducted at noon at the High Country Training Center, 0225 Summit County Road 1003 in the County Commons near Frisco. The Joint Information Center(JIC) is at the County Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

Out of respect for Jones’ family and the Summit Fire & EMS staff, please direct all inquiries to Public Information Officer Steve Lipsher.
